For as long as I can remember, I have been a huge light nazi. I could care less about driving my roommates nuts with it or bugging someone to turn of their lights before we leave their home.
Because I like to multiply, I made a quick calculation on the lights in my building at work. We have about 135 meeting rooms and assuming there are, on average, 10 flourescent bulbs per room and it costs about $0.12/kwh, I am justified in obsessively turning off lights because it could save $129,168 per year or 17, 309 Ibs of CO2 emissions per year for the 16 non-work hours during the work week. To put the carbon emissions in perspective, the average American produces ~16.64 Ibs CO2 emissions per year. Yeah, it takes me some extra time to walk down the quarter-mile hallway and gets me some really odd looks from others, but I think I'm okay with that.
